10U TEAMS GAIN VALUABLE EXPERIENCE AT COUNTY CUP

10u Girls County Cup – Woodbridge – 27th-28th May 2017

10u girls county cup was held at Woodbridge. Norfolk’s team consisted of Ruby Syer, Evie Williams, Cristina Chocis, and Diana Chocis. The other counties in the event were Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Middlesex. The counties were split into two boxes of three, and each county plays the other two counties in their box on the first day. Each match consists of three singles and one doubles.

Norfolk’s first match was against a very strong Middlesex team. All of the girls trying their hardest but just not being able to convert any of the matches. After the singles Norfolk were 3-0 down. All of the girls responded well to advice given by captain Kim Burgess during the matches to try to help. The girls seemed to enjoy the experience and realised the quality of the girls they played against.

Next up was a very familiar Suffolk team; all of the team had played the Suffolk team many times before, and knew if they played well they could win. The wind was very strong and seemed to affect both teams play. Diana played in this round after her twin Cristina played the first round; she worked very hard at number three however was beaten. Evie and Ruby were still battling it out, but both matches looking positive. Ruby won her match playing some thoughtful tennis. Evie lost a very close three set battle to take the score to 2-1 to Suffolk.

Then onto the doubles where Cristina and Diana played against the Middlesex pair. They lost 4-2 4-1, but played a very good match where the girls worked together as a team well. Ruby and Evie then played the Suffolk pair at doubles. This match was a very important match because if Norfolk won they would then play a doubles shoot out tie break to decide the match, and if Suffolk won they won the tie. Although this was a crucial match both teams seemed to lack energy and were struggling slightly in the heat. With Norfolk winning the first set in a tie-break it looked positive. However Suffolk then won the next set, so at a set all they played a match tie break to 10 points. It was an incredibly close tie-break with both teams leading at different points, however unfortunately Suffolk just sneaked the win 10-8. A very disappointed Norfolk team went home.

Norfolk returned at 8.30am the next day to warm up to play for 5th and 6th place against Bedfordshire. The girls were feeling better after the Saturday’s disappointment and were ready to play again. All of the girls looked to enjoy their matches; Cristina had a close match where she played some of her best tennis she had played over the weekend, losing 3-5 1-4. Evie won her match 4-2 4-2 and Ruby also won 4-0 5-3. Norfolk leading 2-1 after the singles matches. Ruby and Evie played doubles, learning and improving on some of the errors they made the day before the won 4-1 4-2. Cristina played a brilliant practise match against Bedford’s number two winning 4-1 4-1.

Overall Norfolk finished in 5th place. The girls all worked hard and will have learnt a great deal from this experience. A huge thanks goes to all of the players and the parents supporting both days.

Saturday – First Match vs Middlesex

Great weather greeted us on arrival and all the team were raring to go, all warming up on court by 8.30am. However this was a tough start against the eventual winners Middlesex. Lucas playing at number 3 came back from 4-0, 3-0 down to put us one up but unfortunately neither Charlie or Jayden could match his heroics and we were 2-1 down after the singles. In the doubles Euan & Lucas gave the two G1*s a fright before succumbing in two very close sets.

Loss 3-1

Saturday – Second Match vs Suffolk

In a county match last season Suffolk had badly beaten a weakened Norfolk team so revenge was the target in this fixture. Again after a slow start our number three singles, this time Euan, pulled out a huge win after being 4-0, 2-0 down. Charlie at number 2 played a very solid match to take us 2 up but again at number one Jayden could not quite make it three wins. This set up a huge doubles with the winners progressing to the semi-finals the next day. Charlie & Jayden played their match of the weekend beating the Suffolk pair in 2 easy sets to finish the day on a high.

Win 3-1.

Sunday – Semi Final vs Essex

Unfortunately this will go down as a huge missed chance, the team were one point away from a place in the final & a very strong chance of making national finals, but unfortunately it was not to be. Again our third player, Euan, pulled out another huge comeback after again starting slow & going down 4-0, 2-0. He stormed back to win & Jayden did the same at number one, bringing his A game to the court. It was down to Charlie to bring it home & take the team into the Final. However the Essex number 2 was made of stern stuff & fought back after saving 4 match points to win the match & take the tie into the doubles. Our top pair of Charlie & Jayden took to the court but after a slow start could not get back into the match & lost in two sets & then the shootout Tie break disappointingly leaving us in the third/fourth play-off rather than playing for a place in the national final.

Lost 3-2

Sunday – Third/Fourth Play-off vs Cambridgeshire

It was Jayden’s turn to star in the singles after both Charlie at 2 & Lucas at 3 lost in straight sets. Jayden turned round a match that at one point looked to might have got away but he kept his composure to ensure the doubles was live & Norfolk still had a chance. Unfortunately the doubles was a step too far and after two long days at the venue the pair lost in straight sets meaning Norfolk would finish fourth when things could have been so much different.

Lost 3-1.
