8u Girls county event at Redbridge
On the morning of Sunday 12th March the 8u girl’s county team arrived at Redbridge sports centre. All on time and looking very smart in their county kits. The team was made up of Larisa Marginean, Anghela Sionosa, Lois Cargill, Ellie Howlett, Freya Braybrook, and Matilda Cabrera-Burns. There were 10 counties competing all together which were Cambridge, Suffolk, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire.
The Norfolk girls were excited and a little nervous to be playing such a big event for their county. The teams were split into two boxes of five counties. Norfolk had Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Berkshire in their box.
First up Norfolk had to play Cambridge, all of the girls competed well but it was only Ellie Howlett who managed to win her rubber and get the Norfolk girls on the score board. Matilda, Lois and Freya had close matches that unfortunately they couldn’t convert. Norfolk v Cambridge final score was 5-1 to Cambridge.
Next we played Berkshire with Matilda, Freya and Lois winning getting us off to a great start. Sadly the other girls couldn’t manage to get another win to win the tie. Norfolk v Berkshire score was 3-3, so we drew this tie.
Then Norfolk had to take on Buckinghamshire, again Matlida playing at number 6 managed to win her rubber 10-8. However, sadly none of the other girls managed to get a win, Lois and Anghela’s matches were very close, and could have gone either way. Anghela narrowly losing on a sudden death point at 9-9 to lose 10-9. Norfolk v Buckinghamshire final score was 5-1 to Buckinghamshire.
Finally Norfolk played a very strong Hertfordshire team (who were the eventual winners.) Matilda got another win under her belt with a close 10-8 win. Ellie having a very close match but unable to win, losing 10-7. Despite the girls hard work none of the other managed a win making the score 5-1 to Hertfordshire.
The boxes were finished and the score collected and put into the computer, which calculated Norfolk finishing 5th in our box. Captain’s Kimberley Burgess and Charlotte Groves were disappointed with this as we were hoping the draw against Berkshire would allow us the 4th place. However it wasn’t to be as Berkshire had won one more rubber than we had. This meant Norfolk girls had to play off for 9th and 10th place with Oxfordshire. This tie went better for the girls with nearly all players winning their matches. Norfolk v Oxfordshire final score was 4-2 to Norfolk. Therefore the Norfolk girls finished in 9th place.
I would like to thank all of the girls for being wonderfully behaved and for trying their hardest throughout the day. They all smiled there way though the morning, whether winning or losing. I feel they will have learnt lots from the event, and will want to improve for next time.
