Richard Bloomfield has become the new Racquets Manager at Virgin Active, Norwich. Having spent the last 4 months running the Virgin Active Tennis Team at the Warwickshire club near Coventry, Bloomfield is pleased to be working within Norfolk. He said “As my playing career is coming to an end I have started to get into coaching. I spent some time at Culford School earlier in the year before getting involved with Virgin Active. I have been working across several clubs helping to deliver some of the junior performance programme across the group. It is great to now be in Norfolk, I have always loved representing this county”.
Bloomfield, one of Norfolk’s greatest players has a wealth of experience to bring to players from across the county. He played 4 Wimbledon Championships, was a member of the GB Davis Cup Team and reached a career high ATP World Ranking of 176. Richard continues to represent the county in the Aegon Men’s County Cup.
Appointed in January, Bloomfield will be looking to drive the membership offering at Virgin Active and to increase participation at the club. “We have great indoor and outdoor facilities here and I will be looking to get a racket in the hands of lots of our 750 junior members”. The club has a number of coaches who provide coaching for all age groups and abilities. Bloomfield is keen to reach out to the local community and get more people playing:- “I would like to think we can create some strong links with Norfolk LTA and run more events and tournaments. We will be looking at developing an active schools programme through the local school sports partnership”.
The club already has a Men’s team competing in the National Premier League Doubles event. Bloomfield is part of the team along with a few of his county team compatriots, Will Davies, Dan Wynne, Harry Weeds, Kris Jenkins. They have won all 5 of the matches played to date and are on course for the National Finals in April.
